SIMPLE ALGEBRA?? 1/5x-1/4x=3... solve for x

OpenStudy (lindsey11x16):

x = -60 :)

OpenStudy (lindsey11x16):

Would you like to know how i got to that?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes please!

OpenStudy (lindsey11x16):

(1/5x) and (1/4x) don't have common denominators so you can't subtract them! so the best common denominator would be 20. You multiply 1/5x times 4/4 to get 4/20x. Then you multiply 1/4x times 5/5 to get 5/20x. Now that you have common denominators you can subtract 4/20x - 5/20x which equals -1/20x. So now your problems looks like this: -1/20x = 3. To get x by itself you multiply by the reciprocal of -1/20x on each sides. Your x becomes by itselfs because -1/20 times -20/1 cancel out. NOWWW your problem looks like this x= 3(-20/1) 3(-20) = -60. Divide that by 1 and it stays -60. Which means x= 60.

** oops i mean x = -60. !
