what is f(-1) ? What is f(9) ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

look at the picture

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes, look at it and answer my question. What is f(-1) and what is f(9) ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

idk i gave u all the info i was given.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I'm trying to say that you can answer this, rather than me just give you the answer without you understanding any of it...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i posted the picture at the top if that helps

OpenStudy (anonymous):

and I will help you to answer it if you want. But I'm not going to look at it and do all the work for you.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

This is work that's been assigned to you, so you should be able to work this out. I'll help you work it out if you're a bit unsure, but I won't just do it for you. So the most basic starting point, that *you* should be thinking about, is, "what is f(-1)?" Do you know how to go about working that out?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

How does one figure that out?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You go to the definition of the function, which is given in the picture you linked to.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

There are three possible values for the function: 11, -14, 1. Which one of those it takes depends on if it satisfies the condition to the right of that number. So you need to take your value of x, ( -1 ), and see which of the conditions on the right is satisfied by x=-1.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

and?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So what is f(-1) ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what do u mean by satisfied?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

would it be 11? because -1 </=5?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I mean, if you substitute the value of x into one of the conditions on the right, then that condition is true. For example the condition could be x < 1. If x = 0, then x satisfies that condition. if x = 2, then x does not satisfy the condition.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes. f(-1) = 11 because -1 <= 5.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Now you can work out f(9), and then you can answer the question and actually understand why you got that result. So then if you have a test or something you might actually know what you're doing.
