In the lecture proving the Law of Conservation of Momentum, it was stated the external forces must be zero for this law to hold. How then can we apply this law to the collisions of billiard balls where clearly there is an external force (gravity)?

Momentum will be conserved in a particular direction when the particles are free to move and no external force is acting in that direction
