Mathematics 9 Online

Graph and shade. please explain.. 1. x – 3 > –9 2. –2x + 1 ≤ –11 3. 10 < –3x + 1 4. 2(x + 5) > 8x – 8 5. –2(x – 3) ≥ 5 – (x + 3)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Firstly get all the x's on one side and the numbers on the other.( if you add or subtract you dont affect the equality sign but if you multiple or divide by a negative number swap the sign) so for no 1. x-3 >-9 gives x > -9+3 which means x > -6. try and do this for all 5 first

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Would that be the same thing for number 2 & 5 because I notice that they have different signs.. So do the steps change?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I will go through 5 with you if you like?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes please.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

. –2(x – 3) ≥ 5 – (x + 3). Ok so I first expand the brackets. -2x +6 ≥ -x -3. that ok?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I will take the x's to the right hand side and numbers to left. so 6 + 3 ≥ -x +2x, therefore 9 ≥ x

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thank you :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

want help sketching?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yeah i have no clue how to graph :/

OpenStudy (anonymous):

this is really simple

OpenStudy (anonymous):

we will take x > 1 for example
