i need help solving

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OpenStudy (phi):

can you factor the quadratic polynomials?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yea i did that and got (x+5)(x^2+10x+25)/(x^2+3x-10)(x^2-4x+4)

OpenStudy (phi):

factor means change (x^2+10x+25) to (x+5)(x+5) you do that to all the expressions, and then (hopefully) cancel factors that are in the top and bottom

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh ok

OpenStudy (phi):

can you factor (x^2 -4x +4) ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

(x+2)(x-2)

OpenStudy (phi):

(x+2)(x-2)= x^2-4 (difference of squares) to factor (x^2 -4x +4) the + in +4 (the last number) means both answers will have the same sign the - in -4 (in -4x) means the larger answer will be -. both of these rules means both answers are negative now list pairs of factors that give 4: 1,4 2,2 which pair, with both negative, add up to the middle number -4? yes -2 and -2 that means the factors are (x-2)(x-2)

OpenStudy (phi):

try x^2 +3x -10

OpenStudy (anonymous):

(x-2) (x+5)

OpenStudy (phi):

the -10 means the answers will have different signs the +3 means the larger answer is + (and so the smaller is -)

OpenStudy (phi):

now put it all together and cancel terms that are in the top and bottom

OpenStudy (phi):

\[ \frac{(x-2)(x-2)(x+5)}{(x+5)(x+5)(x+5)(x-2) }\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok so then the answer for what i asked would be (x-2)/(x+5)^2

OpenStudy (anonymous):
