Simplify question PLEASE HELP!! :)

OpenStudy (kuoministers):

I dont know what to do first :P

OpenStudy (kuoministers):

\[\frac{ x - y }{ y^2 + xy - 2x^2 }\]

hartnn (hartnn):

i would try to factor out x-y from denominator y^2+xy -x^2 -x^2 = (y^2-x^2) + (xy -x^2) do u see a factor of x-y in both ??

hartnn (hartnn):

actually ,the factor is y-x in both, right ?

OpenStudy (kuoministers):

i dont see it in the demominator lol im but slow

OpenStudy (kuoministers):

bit*

hartnn (hartnn):

\(a^2-b^2 =(a-b)(a+b)\) now ?

OpenStudy (kuoministers):

yea i get that

hartnn (hartnn):

then try to solve further...if u get stuck, i'll tell u next step...

OpenStudy (kuoministers):

should this be the next step? (y + x)(y - x)+ x(y - x)

hartnn (hartnn):

exactly! good.. now factor out y-x from that...

OpenStudy (kuoministers):

would be (y - x)(y + 2x)

hartnn (hartnn):

yes.!

OpenStudy (kuoministers):

so the answer is \[\frac{ 1 }{ y + 2x }\]

hartnn (hartnn):

the numerator had x-y , not y-x u need to write x-y = -(y-x)

OpenStudy (kuoministers):

oh yea :P my bad \[\frac{ 1 }{ -y -2x }\]

OpenStudy (kuoministers):

hope this is right?

hartnn (hartnn):

absolutely.

hartnn (hartnn):

or -1/(y+2x)

OpenStudy (kuoministers):

ok thanks so much

hartnn (hartnn):
