-9x - 3 > 51

OpenStudy (anonymous):

x<6

OpenStudy (help!!!!):

x<-6

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

First, add 3 to both sides -9x > 54 Now divide both sides by -9, but be careful when you divide an inequality by a negative number, because when you multiply or divide an inequality by a negative number, the inequality sign changes direction. -9x/-9 < 54/-9 x < 6

These can be tricky. Just be sure to do the same thing to both sides and, if you're multiplying or dividing both sides by a negative value, switch the sign. So: -9x - 3 > 51 We need to isolate "x" so let's add 3 to both sides. -9x > 54 Then we need to divide both sides by -9, but remember to switch the sign since we're dividing by a negative. x < 54/(-9) x < -6 hope that's helpful!
