how about -9 divided by (-4) show as an imporper fraction)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

- 9 / - 4 When dividing fractions you " flip " the number you are dividing by and then you multiply. Also remember that a negative divided by a negative equals a positive. Knowing this, lets do the problem.... - 9 / - 4 - 9 x - 1/4 (you see how I flipped what I was dividing by) Now multiply.... - 9/ 1 x - 1/4 9/4 ( a negative divided by a negative equals a positive.

thank you kelliegirl33

This is somewhat straightforward. We started with: -9 divided by (-4) As a fraction, that's (-9)/(-4) We simplify that to 9/4 (because a negative divided by a negative gives a positive) 9/4 is an improper fraction, so we're done! Hope that helps!

Thank you I had 4/9

P.S. You only need to do the "flip and multiply" thing if the second number is a fraction. For example, "15 divided by 3" can be written as a simply as "15/3", a simple fraction, without doing all that flipping and multiplying. Or "1 divided by 2" is simply one half, or 1/2! Hope that doesn't make it more confusing! :-) Fractions are often confusing.
