I am struggling a little bit with these problems because I'm not to sure how to solve them, if you could help me that be greatly appreciated thank you. 2x + 1 >= 5 or -3x > -9 Part 1: Solve the inequality above. Part 2: Describe the graph of the solution. -7y - 17 > 11 Part 1: Solve the inequality above. Part 2: Describe the graph of the solution.

OpenStudy (unklerhaukus):

\[2x+1≥5,\qquad\text{or}\qquad -3x>-9\] looking at the first inequality, take one from both sides, then divided both sides by 2, to isolate \(x\)

OpenStudy (unklerhaukus):

for the second inequality \[-3x>-9\] divide both sides by negative three, note, that because we are dividing by a negative number, you must Reverse the direction of the inequality

OpenStudy (unklerhaukus):

tell me what you get when you have simplified these inequalities,

OpenStudy (anonymous):

for the first one 2 cant divide into 5 though. im sorry im horrible at math.

OpenStudy (unklerhaukus):

take one from both sides Before dividing by 2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay so for the first one I did 2x+1>= 5 subtracted 1 from 1 and 5 that left me with 2x>= 4 and by dividing it by two i got 2x is that right?

OpenStudy (unklerhaukus):

2x≥4 is correct ,

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay and for the second one you said divide by negative 3 and i have to switch the direction of the inequality so it would be -3x<-9 and i would divide both by -3 so I would end up with -6x<-12? thank you so much for actually helping me I dont really have people to explain to me in my family

OpenStudy (unklerhaukus):

but we havent finished 2x≥4 divide both sides by two , like this 2x/2≥4/2 simplify...

OpenStudy (unklerhaukus):

x≥ ...?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I would just be left with 2 because 2 divides into 4 and that gives me two and two cant go into 2 because it would end up with 0 right? so final answer is 2x

OpenStudy (unklerhaukus):

2x/2= 1x = x

OpenStudy (unklerhaukus):

2 divided by 2 is one

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I'm sorry I'm not explaining enough I was thinking how you showed it 1x would just be x so x just stays there. Not that two and two is zero. but the final answer would be 2x right? because 2 divided into 4 is two and im left with x so 2x

OpenStudy (unklerhaukus):

the final answer should be x≥2

OpenStudy (unklerhaukus):

does that make some sense?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes it does thank you, for the second problem did I do that right or did i mess up as well?

OpenStudy (unklerhaukus):

Now the second inequality −3x>−9 dividing by -3 −3x/-3<−9/-3 simplify this

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I would end up with -6x<-12

OpenStudy (unklerhaukus):

your adding the numbers when you should be dividing them ...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

since its negative they add up .. im using my calculator and thats the answer it is giving me

OpenStudy (unklerhaukus):

that is not how division works to divide negative three , by negative three press these buttons \[[-][3][\div][-][3][=]\]

OpenStudy (unklerhaukus):

and you should get 1

OpenStudy (unklerhaukus):

to divide negative nine , by negative three press these buttons [−][9][÷][−][3][=] what do you get when you do this?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Okay im sorry i was pressing the wrong button my calculator didnt have the same signs I got 1 and 3

OpenStudy (unklerhaukus):

thats better

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So since the 1 is pretty much x that leaves me with just 3

OpenStudy (unklerhaukus):

right so what is the solution for the second inequality ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

and it would be like the last problem so I would have the answer x<3

OpenStudy (unklerhaukus):

gooood

OpenStudy (unklerhaukus):

so we have x≥2 or x<3 can you graph this on a number line?

OpenStudy (unklerhaukus):

|dw:1355711919408:dw|

OpenStudy (anonymous):

It would be starting on the 2 and it would go towards the right because its greater than so more than two.. right?

OpenStudy (unklerhaukus):

yeah
