What is the value of x? The image shows a right scalene triangle. One angle is 93.5 degrees. The other is x degrees. Find x.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Can you provide the image please?

I'm trying to remember how to do this Erin, hold on just a second!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

It looks like the opposite sides are congruent? or angles?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yup. Since the opposite sides are congruent, the triangle is isosceles. Remember that theorem that talks about the base angles of an isosceles triangle?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

CPCTC?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Not yet, in an isosceles triangle, the base angles are congruent. So x should also be the measure of the other, unlabeled angle (because both are base angles, opposite to the congruent sides). Remember the theorem that says the sum of all angles in a triangle is 180? So 93.5+2x=180. Then you can solve for x.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

If two angles of a triangle are congruent, the sides opposite them are congruent. So, if 93.5 + 2x = 180 then 2x - 86.5=0 ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OK. Continue solving the equation and voila.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

x = 43.25

OpenStudy (anonymous):

That, I believe, is correct.

Thank you for your time! I forgot all about turning decimals into fractions.
