What is a present participle?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

well There is a present participle, talking, and a past participle, talked. a person can say either I talk or I am talking to show present tense; I talked, I have talked, or I had talked to show past action. When a present participle is used with an auxiliary verb, the purpose is to show continuing or ongoing action: She is doing the laundry. He was speaking when someone interrupted him. Hope that helps!!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Then how do you tell the difference between just something in a past tense rather than in a past participle?
