Factor completely: x2 − 3x − 10 (x + 5)(x − 2) (x − 10)(x + 1) (x − 5)(x + 2) (x + 10)(x − 1)

OpenStudy (hba):

There are two ways to factorize these : 1)breaking the middle term 2)completing the whole square method Which one would you prefer ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You can also try to distribute all the answers, and she if they match your equation

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Distribution please or if you could

OpenStudy (hba):

Well @BrittanyFrench has told you a way to do it but you have to check all your options, which may take more time than breaking the middle term.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

breaking the middle term it is... lol

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yeah, sorryy! Thats the only way I got taught. Maybe i'll watch you and have another way lol

OpenStudy (hba):

Think of two numbers which we multiply we get -10 and when we add we get -3

OpenStudy (anonymous):

-5 and 2

OpenStudy (hba):

So replace -5x+2x in place of -3x in your equation.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

x^2-(-5x+2x)?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

-10

OpenStudy (hba):

I said you to replace with -3x so the - sign also goes along with that.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

x^2-5x+2x-10

OpenStudy (hba):

Yeah right now take common from first two terms and last two terms.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

x^2-5x= x(?) 2x-10= -2(?)

OpenStudy (hba):

Lemme show you :( x^2-5x+2x-10 x(x-5)+2(x-5) Now you understand how we get this ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

lol yes thank you ^.^

OpenStudy (hba):

So which one do you think is your answer dude ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I feel like if I guess wrong u'll mentally slap me XD uh.. I think it's the third choice

OpenStudy (hba):

Yeah you guessed right,so,don't worry. You just need to practice a number of these:)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thank you!
