Mathematics 16 Online
OpenStudy (anonymous):

16 + 2n = 10

OpenStudy (tim):

1. Subtract 16 from both sides, and what do you get?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

4?

OpenStudy (tim):

close, basically 16-16 + 2n = 10 - 16 So 2n = -6

OpenStudy (tim):

then do get the value of n, you divide both sides by 2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thank you

OpenStudy (tim):

so 2n/2 = -6/2 n = -3

OpenStudy (tim):

Then stick n back in, and make sure the original equation is true (just to make sure I didn't mess up =)).

OpenStudy (tim):

16 + 2n = 10 16 + 2*-3 = 10 16 -6 = 10 10 = 10

OpenStudy (tim):

so looks legit to me!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ya it does so the answer it -3

OpenStudy (tim):

The whole idea of these problems is doing the same operation to both sides (in this case, subtract 16, and then divide by 2) in order to get "n" all by itself

OpenStudy (tim):

and then yes, that's the answer, n = -3

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thank you so much

OpenStudy (tim):

No problem! Good luck.
