The circumference of a wheel is 3 in and is rotating 5 times a minute. How much of a distance will it have traveled in one minute?

OpenStudy (saifoo.khan):

3 inches if for 1 rotation. So if it is done 5 times, the rotation will be 5 times. Hence: 3* 5

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Wait so I multiply 3 x 5?

OpenStudy (saifoo.khan):

Yes.

OpenStudy (agent0smith):

Don't forget the units, inches.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i AM STILL CONFUSED.....

OpenStudy (anonymous):

how?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I DO NOT KNOW HOW MUCH IT WILL TRAVEL IN 1 MINUTE....

OpenStudy (whpalmer4):

The wheel is rotating 5 times a minute, right? Each rotation of the wheel moves the circumference (3 inches) along the path. Distance traveled in 1 minute = 5 rotations/minute * 3 inches/rotation * 1 minute = 15 inches Notice how the units cancel out leaving you the distance unit and nothing else. This is a valuable check to make sure you have done your conversions and setup correctly. If you end up with something like rotations * rotations/inches, you've done it wrong.
