Solve -3x + 1 > 4 and describe the graph of the solution. A x < -1; Open circle on -1, shading to the left B x < -1; Open circle on -1, shading to the right C x > -1; Open circle on -1, shading to the left D x > -1; Open circle on -1, shading to the right
umm 5 hehe
@poster123 wait so what would be the answer?
sure i guess
Solve an inequality of this type like you'd solve an equation, with one exception. You can add the same number to both sides, and you can subtract the same number from both sides, just like with an equation. You can multiply or divide both sides by the same _positive_ number, just like an equation. The difference is if you multiply or divide both sides of an inequality by a _negative_ number, the inequality sign changes direction.
-3x + 1 > 4 Subtract 1 from both sides -3x > 3 Now you need to divide both sides by -3, so the inequality sign must change direction: (-3x)/(-3) < 3/(-3) x < -1 To show this on a number line, since the inequality sign is simply less than, and not less than or equal to, you place an open circle on -1, to show -1 is not part of the solution. Then you darken the number line to the left, to show the solution is all numbers less than -1.
@mathstudent55 so its B?
B states "Open circle on -1, shading to the right" Did you read carefully what I wrote?
@mathstudent55 sorry i meant A, is it A?
yes, it's A
