Why is not correct to say that 90 degrees Celsius is 3 times hotter than 30 degrees Celsius?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what would "three times hotter"? mean in this context. if you convert say to Fahrenheit, one would not be three times the other

OpenStudy (anonymous):

well, this is in terms of levels of data in statistics, celsius is appraently in the interval leve

OpenStudy (anonymous):

but i mean isent 90 degrees three times hotter than 30? i guess i dont understand the cocnept or temperature..lol

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no it is not

OpenStudy (anonymous):

compare to saying for example that 90 feet is 3 times longer than 30 feet, which is true. in that example, if you measured in meters, one would still be 3 times the other but that is because 0 feet is the same as 0 meters

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh, so it has to do with inhert zero ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

0 C is 32 F now if i multiply each number by 3, i get 0 C is 96 F which is silly

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay, i kinda of see it know, let me ruminate over this some more, thanks

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i think the basic difference between say length in different measurements and temperature in different measurents is that converting lengths would be direct variation, but converting temperatures would not say we have different currencies 12 dollars is 3 times 4 dollars and if we convert to euros, one will still be three times the other yw
