If y is 6 when x is 3 and y varies directly with x, find y when x is 8.

OpenStudy (campbell_st):

looks like y = 2x if its direct variation substitute x = 4 to find y

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so is 4?

OpenStudy (campbell_st):

oops should read substitute x = 8 to find y

geerky42 (geerky42):

Since y varies directly with x, y = kx, where k is unknown constant. We know that y = 6 when x = 3 so plug these value into the equation: 6 = k(3) Divide both sides by 3. 2 = k We know that constant is 2. That's where @campbell_st get the equation y = 2x. Now we know that x = 8. Plug it into the equation then solve for y.

geerky42 (geerky42):

Is this clear? No?

yes
