Ill give you a Medal What is the tone of the poem? What types of figurative language was used for we have thought the longer thoughts And gone the shorter way And we have danced to the devils' tunes, shivering home to pray To serve one master in the night, Another in the day

I'd say it's very melancholy. The author seems to be expressing a sadness or sort of unwanted depression about serving two masters. It talks about serving one in the day which perhaps points to being a slave to the master of riches, working for nothing but money, which some view as the Devil's influence on the world. It also talks about "shivering home to pray" which could mean being also a slave to God or a religion of some sort that they only have time to slave for at night. The author used metaphoric expressions as well as some symbolism talking of the masters' they serve. I'm not sure if this is what your teacher is looking for, it's just what I understood and my viewpoint from reading this poem.
