Sinclair has so many. At the top of my list is THE JUNGLE, which I have my students read to explore the underbelly of the meatpacking plants and exploitation of immigrants in the early 1900s. (dont eat sausages or hotdogs while reading this one!) I like the novels in which he uses his socialist viewpoint to expose the evils of big business as "The Jungle" does: OIL unravels the famous Teapot Dome Scandal, KING COAL and THE COAL WAR expose the poor working conditions in the early boom years of the coal industry, while books like WIDE IS THE GATE and BOSTON are commentaries on the Depression years of the 1930s and the latter is a documentary novel criticizing the justice system in the famous Sacco-Vanzetti executions. Those are the ones I have either read or are most familiar with. As a side note, the novel OIL produced the backdrop for the movie, "There Will be Blood" (if you havent seen it, rent it soon...you will love Daniel Day Lewis in this academy award-winning role) Good luck on your assignment. Source(s): personal readings, and my own knowledge of these works, since I taught US History for many years in high school.
