The distance between Singapore and Tokyo is 3300 miles. On a wall map, this distance is represented by 11 inches. How far apart are two cities on the map if the actual distance between them is 6300 miles?

OpenStudy (bahrom7893):

3300 - 11 6300 - x

OpenStudy (anonymous):

start by \(3300\div 11=300\) so each inch is 300 miles

OpenStudy (bahrom7893):

set up a proportion

OpenStudy (bahrom7893):

sat's method works too, as usual

OpenStudy (anonymous):

then divide \(6300\div 300\) to compute miles to inches

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I'm still confused

OpenStudy (anonymous):

each inch represents a certain number of miles since \(3300\) miles is represented by 11 inches, you know each inch represents \(3300\div 11=300\) miles, i.e. one inch represents 300 miles is that okay so far?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

now you have \(6300\) miles, and you want to know how many inches that would be on the map

OpenStudy (anonymous):

since each inch is 300 miles, you want to know \(300x=6300\) or more easily stated as you want to know what is \(3600\div 300\)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oops typo there sorry you want to know \(6300\div 300\)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

is that ok or is that confusing still?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i think that's ok ..

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok but just to make sure it is clear 1 inch is 300 miles 2 inches is 600 miles 3 inches is 900 miles etc in other words, \(x\) inches is \(300x\) miles you have \(6300\) miles to convert to inches, so you want to know what you would multiply 300 by to get \(6300\) which is just another way of saying, what is \(6300\div 300\)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

which would be 21

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so the answer would be 21 inches?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thank you
