Check my work please? Question: Write an equation of a line that passes through (2, 1) and (0, -5)? My answer: Okay so first we need to find the slope. So we use the slope formula y2 - y1/x2 - x1 = - 5 - 1/ 0 - 2 = - 4/- 2 which equals 2, so the slope is 2. So now that we have the slope, we can use the point slope form y - y1 = m(x - x1). So to that we just use our slope and one ordered pair. So we get y - 1 = 2(x - 2), now we distribute. y - 1 = 2x - 4, now we add one to both sides y - 1 + 1 = 2x - 4 + 1 = y = 2x - 5. So now we have it in slope intercept form.

When subtracting 1 from -5 you would get -6 not -4.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

That makes the slope 3, not 2.

The final answer would be y=3x-5.

Thanks.
