If I am doing synthetic division on (x^3-14x+8)/(x-2) would my answer be 1x-18+(80/x+4)?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

can't be because if you divide a polynomial of degree 3 by a polynomial of degree one you get a polynomial of degree 2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

if you want me to make a guess, i would say you might have forgotten to keep the place of the missing \(x^2\) term

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Okay, I shall re-try this

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the coefficients you list should be 1 0 -14 8 2 etc

OpenStudy (anonymous):

where did the 0 come from?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@DanielAcedo your original polynomial is missing the x^2 term. That means the x^2 coefficient is 0 (since 0x^2 = 0 and adding 0 makes no difference).
