A spruce tree is approximately the shape of a cone with a slant height of 20 ft. The angle formed by the tree with the ground measures 72 degrees. Estimate the height of the tree. Round to the nearest foot. (picture below)

It's sine relationship!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

That's not even a choice.. The choices are A) 22ft .. B) 27 ft .. C) 18 ft .. D) 17 ft

@Ruhhr ...Chlorophyll is not expected to give you the answer. You have to work it out yourself and understand the concept. Getting the answer does nothing to your knowledge of these types of questions.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Well if someone helped me work it out, that would be GREAT.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Chlorophyll has already given you a hint that it's something to do we using sine and trigonometry.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I already knew it's a sine.. It's sine and cosine.. The section already tells me what I'm in.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Then apply that concept into solving the question. If you're so brilliant at knowing it's sine, then use that to your advantage and form a equation to find the height.

form an*

What a great helper you are!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ah okay. Whatever suits you: \[\sin 70= \frac{ h }{ 20 }\] Multiply both sides by 20. \[h=20\sin70\] Find h.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@Ruhhr Are you going to say you've known it already ???

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Actually, no.. I just waited til the next day and got help in math retrice. I don't have a teacher teachi this stuff to me, I have to take an online class so Idk as much as I would know if there waan actual teacher teaching thito me.

OpenStudy (warpedkitten):

Even though it's 2 years later, the answer was 19ft. I had the same problem and this post helped me none. Obviously it's cosine/sine, but just simply saying that helps no one.
