@itsmylife ok i suck at this stuff! Please help lol :) Suppose you are getting dressed in the morning and are looking for an outfit. How many different outfits can you create if you have 5 different shirts, 6 different pants, 3 different pairs of shoes, and 2 different hats?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

as many as you want to

OpenStudy (anonymous):

wow lol. that's not correct lol

OpenStudy (anonymous):

180

OpenStudy (anonymous):

It is actually a simple calculation. You multiply your possibilities by each other. Here you'd multiply 4x6 to get your number of outcomes.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

read mine!!!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh ok so just 5*6*3*2 which equals 180! :D

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Lol I was kidding, no its not that simple

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@itsmylife um okay so it's not 180 lol.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

nope

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Consider first the simpler scenario of just shirts and pants. You can take any one shirt (any of the 5) and wear that one shirt with any of 6 pants. So, just considering shirts and pants, there are 30 combos: 6 pants for any of the 5 shirts. 6 x 5. So, just extend that reasoning to all articles of clothing. You just multiply the number you have of each.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

um yeah not sure what i'm doing really right there

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Actually it might just be 180 if you think about it

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yeah that'sw what I thought it was!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

It IS 180. It is that simple. It's just 6 x 5 3 x 2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

well if your concerned about fashion you cant make unlimited combination but if your not then its uncertain

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thats what I thought...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i think that it is just 24

OpenStudy (anonymous):

typo 6 x 5 x 3 x 2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

that's what I though

OpenStudy (anonymous):

it is 180

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok jesh you all was confsuing!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

All you are doing is multiplying the outfit options. And wala~

OpenStudy (anonymous):

are ya guys talking bout ma thought

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh sorry

OpenStudy (anonymous):

sorry britt

OpenStudy (anonymous):

lol no it's cool

OpenStudy (anonymous):

If you were just looking at shirts and pants, you already are up to 30. You just keep multiplying. Again, start with my example of of just shirts and pants to get the concept down. A lot of math is starting with the simple scenarios and working up to the actual problem at hand.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

if it was just shirt pants i wud've done this but we've got shoes and hats too lol thats load of stuff , is that guy supposed to be a joker lol sorry for off the topic talk but its logical

OpenStudy (anonymous):

do you get it @BrittanyFrench

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@ashlynn143 yeah lol

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok just call me and i will help!!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So, for each of the 30 pants/shirts combos, you have 3 different shoes. Now you are up to (6 x 5) x 3 = 90. Throw in the hats: (6 x 5 x 3) x 2 = 180 and then you're done!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

lol ok girl thanks

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yup

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So, if you get the shirt/pants concept down, then going for all 4 types of clothing becomes easier to conceptualize.
