-3-(1/3+3/4)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Can you do the fraction bit first?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

is it 7/12?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

-3-7/12

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Eureka!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ahh no

OpenStudy (anonymous):

how do i solve that? -3 - 7/12

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You got the bit in brackets wrong

OpenStudy (anonymous):

\[1\div3+3\div4\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Good Lord! I am trying to help my daughter and I do not know how to do it. This is crazy!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Hehehehee

OpenStudy (anonymous):

why would you divide?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

1/3 means 1 divided by 3

OpenStudy (anonymous):

one third plus three fourths

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ok 1/3 +3/4 find a common denominator (number on the bottom) So 3x4=12 so multiply all parts of 1/3 by four and get 4/12 4/12 = 1/3

OpenStudy (anonymous):

do the same with 3/4 and we get 9/12 So 3/4 = 9/12

OpenStudy (anonymous):

In brackets the equation is (\[(4+9)\div12\])

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so that would be 13/12 or 1 and 1/12?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Exactly the same thing...............see it's all coming back ;D

OpenStudy (anonymous):

then what would you get for the answer if -3 - 1 and 1/12?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yep, sounds about right to me. That ok?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

-3-(1&1/12) equals what?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thanks for being patient with me. I have not done this stuff in 20 years! (I didn't pay attention much in high school either) lol!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok what does -3 -1=?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

-2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You have -3 and you minus another -1 away you have -4. But the question ask what does -3-(13/12) or what does : -3-(1 and 1/12) equal.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so do you find common denominators

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yep and they would be?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

answer would be -23 over 12 or -1 and 11 over 12?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I don't know let's work it out common denominator is 12 so we h \[-36+13\div12\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

which = -23/12 or -1 11/12 as you said

OpenStudy (anonymous):

keeping going you might graduate one day

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yeah!!!!!! I really do not like math! Thank you for all your help! Have a wonderful night!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Hey you've got to give me a medal ;D

OpenStudy (anonymous):

;D
