"Translation" is where we take a strand of mRNA, and the ribosome "scans" the mRNA strand. Take a look at this picture of translation: http://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/higher/biology/images/03processof_translation_cr2.jpg The BLACK part of the picture, toward the bottom, is the mRNA. It's a whole string of letters, you see. You can see the ribosome, that big blue circle there. After the ribosome scans the mRNA codons, it brings in the tRNA ANTICODONS. You see the YELLOW parts of the picture? Those are the tRNA ANTICODONS. The tRNA anticodons stick to the mRNA codons. And the tRNA anticodons carry amino acids with them. ~~~~~~~~~~~ Take a look at your question. "During translation, the type of amino acid that is added to the growing polypeptide depends on the _______. " Now, again, take a look at the picture. We can see that the mRNA CODONS are scanned by the ribosomes. And after that, the tRNA ANTICODONS come, and attach themselves to the mRNA.
