Evan is landscaping his backyard. The yard is shaped like a rectangle and measures 80 feet by 70 feet. He wants to spread topsoil evenly over the entire surface. One load of topsoil will cover 400 square feet, 4 inches deep. How many loads of dirt does Evan need in order to cover his entire yard?

OpenStudy (mertsj):

What is the area of the yard?

OpenStudy (mertsj):

arr???

OpenStudy (mertsj):

Are you sure about that wolfe?

OpenStudy (mathmate):

@wolfe "subtract"?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

if i do BxH i get 5600 so then subtract the 400 and get 5200!

OpenStudy (mertsj):

You need to cover 5600 square feet. Each load covers 400 square feet. divide 5600 by 400 to see how many loads are needed.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

but my answer options are 14 16 18 20 ??

OpenStudy (mertsj):

Choose the first one.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thanks!

OpenStudy (mathmate):

@wolfe you're right, we can divide by repeatedly subtract, but that's reserved for grade school where they have not yet learned division.
