see that the graph is of y = Sin x .. however, is shifted five units vertically...downward Hence the equation would be, y= (Sin x ) -5 i.e. y + 5 = (Sin x )

thankyou

OpenStudy (anonymous):

WELCOME...You don't need to say Thank You.

OpenStudy (phi):

First, they say it is a cosine graph, so I would expect the answer to be a cosine (if this is multiple choice) second, notice that the total height from lowest at -5 to highest at +1 is 6 units take a look at cos(x). it goes from -1 to +1, for a total height of 2. So your graph is 3 times bigger. if we plot 3*cos(x) it would be the correct height, but it would be at a max (+3) when x is 0. your cosine is at the most negative at x=0. one way to "fix" 3cos(x) is multiply by -1: -3cos(x) if you plot -3cos(x) it will look pretty close to the graph in the problem. but it will be at -3 when x=0 and we want it to be at -5. You have to shift down by 2: -3cos(x)-2 see http://www.wolframalpha.com/input/?i=-3cos%28x%29-2

oops.. @haleylou56 .. please try to see what above user has to say.. He is right here.. I was too careless... please see what @phi has to say

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so its y-3cox(x)-2?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i mean y=

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yep..

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so y=-3cos(X)-2
