Is triangle TVS scalene, isosceles, or equilateral? The vertices are T(1, 1), V(9, 2), and S(5, 8).

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Measure the distance between the points and you will be able to make this determination. Are you familiar with the distance formula?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Not really.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

\[d = \sqrt{(x _{2} - x _{1})^{2} + (y _{2} - y _{1})^{2}}\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh, so I just plug in the numbers where they go?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yeah. Measure the distance from T to V. Then measure the distance from V to S. Finally, measure the distance from S to T. If you get three different distances, for example, you would say Scalene.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Because each distance corresponds to the measure of one side of the triangle.
