Question : $8.75 with a 5.25% sales tax. Can someone explain this clearly for me to understand?
I think the sales tax is $0.46 rounded up. $8.75 x 5.25% = 0.459375. You just figure it out like you do regular tax. If it makes it easier to visualize, think of the extra .25% like a fourth of a percentage point. I've always been thrown off by the decimals in these things, not sure but I don't think the decimal makes much a difference in the equation.
Well, on my example thing, it says that you're supposed to make the percentage a decimal by moving it over two spots to the left. So, 5.25% would equal .0525. I just don't think that would be right though. I tried it and it got all confusing.
The tax part: 5.25% of $8.75 In math, "of" usually means "times", so 5.25% of $8.75 means 5.25% x $8.75 Also, to write a percent as a decimal, move the decimal point left to places: 5.25% = 0.0525 So, 5.25% x $8.75 = 0.0525 x $8.75 = $0.459375 Which can be rounded off to $0.46 To get the total: Now you need to add $0.46 to $8.75 $8.75 + $0.46 = $9.21
I had forgotten to convert it in my answer earlier, sorry about that.
It's fine :]
Thanks! I understand now!
