What led to the growth of political parties in the United States? It should be related to National Bank issues.
When the Constitution was written, a Party system in the United States was actually discouraged by George Washington because he feared it would create division and stagnation in the future. However, it became a reality anyways in the early 1790's from men like Alexander Hamilton and James Madison. Essentially, the First Party System was started around 1792 and featured two main parties: The Federalists, led by Hamilton, and the Democratic-Republicans (anti-federalists), led by Madison and Thomas Jefferson. The Federalists supported a national banking system which emphasized federal assumption of state debts and a tariff to pay off those debts. The anti-Federalists were the virtual opposites. They strongly opposed Hamilton's financial views on national banking, among other things. Finally, I would say the differences between influential men like Hamilton and Jefferson on items such as a National Bank vs. private banks led to the creation of seperate political parties in the late 1700's.
