if a line is perpendicular to another line, does that make that slope negative instead of positive or vice versa? so a line perpendicular to \[y=-\frac27 x-5\] would be \[y=\frac27 x-5\]

You have to switch the fraction also. It's called the "negative reciprocal". For example, the perpendicular slope to -2/7 would be the negative reciprocal of -2/7 which is 7/2
