Even though I'd go with the third one, trustdestinee's answer also plays into it -- humanitarian aid was sometimes used as a cover by the Soviets or the US in providing assistance to nations that they wanted to be buddies with. It's just another way that both these superpowers were "playing the game" to find friends around the world.

I'd probably say the boxing thing is indicative of the social rev happening over in Afghanistan. Under the Taliban, women's rights were severely hampered under Sharia law. To actually engage in a sport like boxing is a pretty bold move in that post-Taliban world.
