OpenStudy (anonymous):

-22 = x - 7

OpenStudy (whpalmer4):

Okay, you want x alone on one side, and the numbers on the other side. What would you add or subtract to make that happen?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

subtract 7 from 22

OpenStudy (whpalmer4):

No...you need to add 7 to each to side: \[-22 = x - 7\] \[-22 + 7 = x - 7 + 7 = x\] \[x = -15\]

OpenStudy (whpalmer4):

See how that works?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay can you tutor me

OpenStudy (whpalmer4):

Isn't that what I'm doing? :-)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes thats correct. Are u in College

OpenStudy (whpalmer4):

No, I finished with that long ago...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ohhh okay. Well I have a test to take and I really needs some online tutoring

OpenStudy (whpalmer4):

But I like seeing people say "oh, now I get it!" :-)

OpenStudy (whpalmer4):

I can answer one more question, and then I need to go to sleep.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay, Thanks... I really appreciate your kindness...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I need some tutoring bad due not finishing school from running away from home and not finishing school

OpenStudy (whpalmer4):

Well, I'll watch for your questions when I'm online, and answer them if I can. My goal is to help you understand how to do them so you can do them yourself and be confident that you have found the correct answer.

OpenStudy (whpalmer4):

It feels good to look at a complicated problem and realize that you know how to do it!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

y - 10 = 14

OpenStudy (whpalmer4):

Okay, you want to get y all alone on the left. Based on what I've done before, what do you think you need to do here?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Sorry my Computer is acting up. I will place 14 to each side

OpenStudy (whpalmer4):

Mmm...let's think of it a little differently. If you had $7, and I told you I had $5 more than you have, how much money did I have?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

5

OpenStudy (whpalmer4):

5 dollars is 5 dollars more than 7 dollars?!?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

12

OpenStudy (whpalmer4):

Right. How did you figure that out?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

my brain is awake now

OpenStudy (whpalmer4):

(what time is it where you are?)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

4:17 am

OpenStudy (whpalmer4):

ah, you're somewhere in the central time zone. I hope you are up really early, not up really, really late :-)

OpenStudy (whpalmer4):

I'm in CA, so it's 2:18 am. But back to my question: how did you figure out that I have $12?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I'm up really late in Dallas... Studying for a GED Math Test....

OpenStudy (whpalmer4):

Let me put some words in your mouth in the interest of getting through this more quickly: "I added $5 to the $7 I had and that gave me $12"

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok

OpenStudy (whpalmer4):

The equation we were solving with my question is: x - 5 = 7 You have 7, and the amount I have (x) is 5 more. So to find x, you added 5 to each side of the equation: x - 5 + 5 = 7 + 5 x = 12

OpenStudy (whpalmer4):

So back to y - 10 = 14 Now how would you solve it?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok

OpenStudy (whpalmer4):

a) add 10 to both sides b) subtract 10 from both sides c) add 14 to both sides d) subtract 14 from both sides

OpenStudy (whpalmer4):

Final question on "Who wants to be a millionaire?" and you're all out of lifelines. tick tock tick tock :-)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

lol, sorry my computer has quit... b

OpenStudy (whpalmer4):

If you subtract 10 from sides, here's what you get: \[y - 10 - 10 = 14 - 10\] \[y - 20 = 4\] Did that get you any closer to the answer?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes i did

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I want to say thank you so much

OpenStudy (whpalmer4):

So what is the answer?

OpenStudy (whpalmer4):

y = ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

y =4

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I'm so sleepy maybe we can try again tomorrow if i see you again.

OpenStudy (whpalmer4):

Oh, no... Original equation was y - 10 = 14. If y = 4, then 4 - 10 = 14. That's not true :-( The right choice was a) add 10 to both sides. y - 10 = 14 y - 10 + 10 = 14 + 10 y = 24 If you see a minus sign in front of something and you want to get rid of it, you need to add, not subtract.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I will again thanks...

OpenStudy (aravindg):

add 7 on both sides :)
