-3/10x -7 < 1/2

OpenStudy (zehanz):

You want to know about the values of x. Looking at the inequality, you see x has been multiplied with -3/10 and then 7 subtracted. To get back at x, you just have to undo these calculations, so add 7 on both sides and divide by -3/10 (or multiply with -10/3) on both sides. You will have the right solution, but only if you have thought about one tiny little catch... (has to do with the dividing/multiplying with a negative number, remember?)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok im working on it

OpenStudy (anonymous):

x<1 2/5

OpenStudy (zehanz):

Can you show your work?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok you add 7 to both sides then the 3/10s add to both sides correct?

OpenStudy (zehanz):

OK, this is what I did:\[-\frac{ 3 }{ 10 }x-7 <\frac{ 1 }{ 2 }\]add 7:\[-\frac{ 3 }{ 10 }x<7\frac{ 1 }{ 2 }=\frac{ 15 }{ 2 }\]Multiply with -10/3, and remember to switch from "<" to ">" !!!\[x>\frac{ 15 }{ 2 }\cdot -\frac{ 10 }{ 3 }=-\frac{ 150 }{ 6 }=-25\]So the solution is: x > -25

oh i see thank you for the help i kept thinking the 3/10 had to go to the right

OpenStudy (zehanz):

-3/10 x means x has been multiplied with -3/10. To undo that, you can multiply another time, now with the inverse of the fraction: -10/3: \[-\frac{ 10 }{ 3 }\cdot -\frac{ 3 }{ 10 }x=\frac{ 10 \cdot 3 }{ 3 \cdot 10 }x=\frac{ 30 }{ 30 }x=x\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok got it thank you very much!

OpenStudy (zehanz):

YW!
