is it possible to divide by zero

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You would get an undefined answer

OpenStudy (anonymous):

can you take two people and put them in zero groups?

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

Division by zero is undefined. This may be an explanation of why. Division is defined as the opposite of multiplication. What does 24 divided by 4 mean? It is the number that when you multiply by 4 you get 24. That number is 6, since 6 x 4 = 24, so 24 divided by 4 = 6. Now consider dividing by zero. Let's say you divide 10 by zero, and call the result 1. Then that should mean that 1 x 0 = 10, but it isn't. Well, say 10 divided by 0 is 5. Then 5 x 0 should equal 10 but isn't. Since there is no number that can make the oppsoite operation true, there is no resuilt to the division by 0. Now you can consider a unique case. How about zero divided by zero. Maybe you can say that 0 divided by 0 is 0 since 0 times 0 is zero. Here there is another problem. Every operation between two numbers has a unique answer. For example, 2 + 5 = 7 and no other number. 7 - 8 = -1 and no other number. The same is true of multiplication and division. 5 x 6 = 30, and only 30. No other number is the result of that multiplication. With division, the same holds true. 50 divided by 10 is 5 because 5 times 10 equals 50 (multplication being the opposite operation to division). Now try zero divided by zero. Maybe we can say that zero divided by zero is 1 because 1 x 0 = 0. But then again, we could say that 0 divided by 0 is 2 becasue 2 x 0 is also equal to 0. 0/0 = 3 because 3 x 0 = 0. There is no uniques solution, and every operation has to have a unique solution, so 0/0 is also undefined. This may be an explanation of why division by zero (any number divided by zero or zero divided by zero) is an undefined operation.
