Solve these two equations using substitution. 1) 3x - 9y = 3 6x - 3y = -24

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Can you explain how you got that please?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

multiply first equation by -2 and then add to second equation.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So then (-5, -2) is the answer?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes it is.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I don't understand how to multiply the first equation by -2 though, can you like show the steps?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The method you used is not substitution.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

It is the Elimination Method

OpenStudy (anonymous):

It's okay if it's elimination.

OpenStudy (aravindg):

well according to ur qn we need to use substitution method to get the answer

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Sorry, it's just that you wrote to solve using substitution

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@person97 is a genius. how did you understand, bro?? :)

OpenStudy (aravindg):

ok then multiply first equation by two then subtract both equations

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Just finished that lesson in math.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Well, that's what I would like to have used but it doesn't matter. I just need help on this question.

OpenStudy (aravindg):

did you try what i said above @FaithIsASiren_OhKellin? ?

OpenStudy (aravindg):

@marsss we do not appreciate giving the final answer in the beginning like that .thank you

OpenStudy (anonymous):

No, I said I didn't know how to multiply it by -2. That's why I asked if someone would show the steps.

OpenStudy (aravindg):

you need to multiply by 2 not -2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@AravindG i think you shouldn't care, maybe :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Actually you could multiply by both numbers, it's just that is you multiplied by -2, you would have to add, and if you multiplied by 2 you would have to subtract.

OpenStudy (aravindg):

@marsss anyway you should for it can result in a ban

OpenStudy (aravindg):

yep @person97 is right

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I got 5x - 18y = 6. Pretty sure that's not right.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I mean 6x.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Which equation did you try?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i always tell everything what i think. if you want to ban me, please do it :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The first one. Multiplied it by 2.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Anyway. it's right for the top equation if you multiplied by 2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Okay. & from there? add the second equation?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Then you would subtract equations.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ah. ok. subtract.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

If you find it easier to add equations, you should multiply by -2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I'm so confused now. Someone subtract it.

OpenStudy (aravindg):

@FaithIsASiren_OhKellin? multiplying first equation by -2 what did u get?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

or add it, doesn't matter. I just need help with the last step.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I multiplied it by 2 and got 6x - 18y =6.

OpenStudy (aravindg):

very good ! now subtract both equations

OpenStudy (anonymous):

That's the part I don't know how to do.
