Square root negative two had a date for a multiplication and an addition problem with Square root negative eight. She was picked up on time and they proceeded to the addition first. The two of them started to add and bingo, that's when it happened. Someone or something stole the negative from little two and left an "i" in it's place. What happened to the negative from Square root negative two? Explain
I dont get the point of math 'stories'... Can you try writing out what you understand?
I understand that square root 2 with an "i" in front of it is still -2. but i dont get what happened to the negative when square root negative 2 added with square root negative 8.
Well, try simplifying the root of 8- find the largest perfect square that fits into there.
So square root 2 times 2?
Yep! so if there was a negative root 8, then it would just be 2i root 2
okay so then what happened to the negative from square root negative 2? Like how did the "i" take the negatives place?
The square root of -1 is i. You cant take the sqrt of a negative number, right? because nothing times itself is negative. So automatically, you make the (-) an i, making sqrt -2 into i root 2
okay, that makes alot of sense. so now that it became just the "i" in front of the 2, could that still be added and multiplyed ever again to square root negative 8?
Well it looks like this now, right?|dw:1358823617593:dw|
