\[\sqrt{2x+3} =1 + \sqrt{x+1}\]

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

To get rid of the square roots, you need to square both sides. When you square the first time, the square root on the left will disappear. On the right side you need to treat it as the square of a binomial. You will still have a square root. Isolate it on one side and square both sides again.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay but how do i treat it like a square of a binomial?

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

After you do all that, you need to check every solution you get in the original equation to make sure it works because squarting both sides can introduce extraneous solutions.

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

I'll start it for you so you can see.
