hey ilene its c because i have a viruse its called mursa and everytime i get bug bite it taked all of my energy out.So its c
D?,
They don't take or use energy. We obtain and use energy, by eating food, and using the calories. The chemical processes that happen in our bodies, such as the ones that process our food, are called our "metabolism." Viruses aren't alive. They do not carry out a metabolism. They're not even cells. They have genetic material, wrapped up in a protein coat. And some of them have a lipid bi-layer "bubble."
@Ammarah Viruses CAN reproduce...in a way. But it's better to call it "replication," than "reproduction," because viruses do not reproduce sexually, or even asexually. They use our cells, in order to make more copies of themselves.
I tend to agree that viruses cant reproduce - they have to hijack a cell for that to happen. Depends on your definition of reproduction but I looked at a couple and they suggest it's a being making something similar to the parent.
GUYS.....ANSWER IS OPTION......B.

@Koikkara Viruses do evolve over time. Take a look at this article: http://www.nature.com/scitable/topicpage/the-origins-of-viruses-14398218 And this one: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Viral_evolution
And this one: http://www.smartplanet.com/blog/science-scope/study-shows-how-swiftly-infectious-viruses-evolve/12136
And this one: http://msutoday.msu.edu/news/2012/msu-researchers-show-how-new-viruses-evolve/
And this one: http://evolution.berkeley.edu/evolibrary/news/071201_adenovirus
@Koikkara Would you like anymore articles?
OF COURSE, THEORETICALLY....THEY DO, BUT AS PER SCIENTIFIC STUDIES...indicate that the changes we are seeing in viruses are due to a genetic drift (random genetic variations within the viral material) rather than a response to drugs! These studies demonstrated that this genetic drift occurred at a constant rate, even when the viruses were subjected to drug treatments (in other words the viruses changed whether or not they had been exposed to drug therapy). The appearance of “drug resistance” may not be as new as researchers once thought. Modeling studies looking at HIV-resistant mutants have demonstrated that drug resistant strains already are present before drug therapy begins , indicating that the changes in these viruses are occurring randomly rather than in response to a particular drug. Do viruses change over time? Yes. Are they purposefully “evolving”? No.
@InYourHead ...I do appreciate your doubt....bcuz textbooks provide just the knowledge within the period before it was assured, but...researchers got an upto date knowledge in the vast fields...which makes you more clear when you opt for higher studies.....
welcome :to the world renovated site were u find all theories and concepts under one roof.... http://www.apologeticspress.org
You just sent me a site where Creationism and Evolution are debated. It's a very vast field. And I think that's quite far from what we're talking about here: virology.
http://www.apologeticspress.org/APContent.aspx?category=9&article=1017....defines...ur doubt well.....
What I'm saying is that we're talking about viruses and how they evolve. Not God, and the bible. The articles that I sent you are very fairly up to date. Most of them were published just last year, in 2012. If you'd like, you can read this article. It's very short: http://evolution.berkeley.edu/evolibrary/news/051115_birdflu And yes, it's up to date. June 2012, it was updated. ~~~~~~~~~~~ Meanwhile, maybe you could tell me how viruses would "obtain and use energy," all on their own. Because if B is false, then C would be true.
I don't think that anything "purposefully evolves" - if I could put my mind to it and increase my lung capacity and VO2 max I would. Any mutation that leads to a slight advantage for a given individual tends to be maintained in the genome of the offspring of that individual. So I'd still suggest that viruses evolve - maybe even computer viruses could be made to evolve and they aren't living.
I don't think Koikkara meant to say that evolution must be voluntary. I think s/he meant to say that evolution requires that virus would solely adapt to drugs. In truth, drugs aren't the only factor that could cause a virus to evolve. Viruses can evolve by crossing their genes with other viruses, for example. That particular method has nothing to do with drug resistance.
And please don't start a Creation vs Evolution debate. I've seen and had enough of those. We're talking about virology. VIRUSES. It is a completely different topic.
lol....watevr.....i just shared what i knew, workin with professional researchers...
By the way, the original question, in the post, came from an actual Biology chapter review. And here is that review, WITH all the correct answers: http://quizlet.com/5740688/bio-chapter-20-flash-cards/
It's the 4th question down. ~~~~~~~~~ I think it's great that you work with professionals. Personally, I intend for human virology to be my personal focus, in biology. I take notes from a medical school virology lecture. For fun.
Ofcourse, at your age.....it was fun for me toooo.....but, after a period, u just get overurned to another interest.....
I've had an interest in medicine for years. Sure, I know what you mean. Interests change over time. But some interests do remain very constant. I also don't believe I've ever told you how old I am.
