Complex Functions: What is the magnitude of 1+ix?

I know that the answer is 1 + x^2, but I keep on thinking that it is 1-x^2 because i^2 = -1.. Can someone please explain this to me?

oh wait i got it, never mind, thank you. i is just there to denote that it is imaginary, so the magnitude still turns out to be sqrt(a^2+b^2) by the pythagorean theorem
