Complex Functions: What is the magnitude of 1+ix?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I know that the answer is 1 + x^2, but I keep on thinking that it is 1-x^2 because i^2 = -1.. Can someone please explain this to me?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

for a+ib mgnitude of a+ib is denoted by |a+ib| and it is given by sqrt(a^2+b^2)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

sorry, i forgot the square root.. but where did the i go?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh wait i got it, never mind, thank you. i is just there to denote that it is imaginary, so the magnitude still turns out to be sqrt(a^2+b^2) by the pythagorean theorem
