Why is the agreement in the following sentence is correct? Neither of the cakes are very expensive.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The verb should agree with cakes, which is a plural noun. The verb should agree with cakes, which is a singular noun. The verb should agree with neither, which is a plural indefinite pronoun. The verb should agree with neither, which is a singular indefinite pronoun.

well neither and cakes are both i think plural, but i don't think you can say neither of (singular noun) if for example it was neither one of us is stupid. so you see: it agrees with cakes which is plural
