Let f(x) = x + 7 and g(x) = x – 2. What is f(x) • g(x)?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You're told f(x)= x+7. That means that x+7 is the same as f(x). Same goes for g(x). So when they're asking you to multiply f(x) with g(x), what would you replace as f(x) and g(x)?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

7 and -2?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Is 7 the same as f(x). What did I say is equal to f(x)?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

x+7

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So what would you replace as f(x)?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

x+7? or 7x?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

where'd you get 7x from?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Math is all about being realistic. If you did't know where you got 7x, then why would you even bring it out into thin air?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

didn't*

OpenStudy (anonymous):

x+7 is correct.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

What would you replace g(x) then?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

x-2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

and sorry..im really horrible at math so i honestly didnt know...goodness lol

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Okay that's correct though even if you're horriblea t math. You got it.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

horrible at*

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so then using what you just knew about f(x) and g(x): \[f(x)\times g(x)=?\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

-14?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You didn't say anything about -14 beforehand, why now?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I'm just asking you to repeat what you said last time about what f(x) and g(x) is.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

well because idk why i didnt..

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok, that make sense i think. ok so if i got this right my answer would be x^2 + 5x – 14

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Wowza, That's awesome! See, if you're actually thinking straight, you can do amazing things. That's absolutely correct!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

why thank you :)
