The polynomial 15xy+3x^3y^4 is what degree?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

15xy is the same as 15x^1y^1 what are the exponents for 15x^1y^1

OpenStudy (anonymous):

7=d

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

you mean you got the degree to be 7 ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

im just asking for the degree? like i know how to do it i just always mess up on the degree

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

to find the degree, you add up the exponents for each monomial so for instance 2x^2y^3, the exponents are 2 and 3....add them to get 5 for 7x^3y^8, the exponents are 3 and 8....add them to get 11 ------------------------------ So if your expression was 2x^2y^3 + 7x^3y^8 then the degree would be 11 since that is the largest sum

OpenStudy (anonymous):

that is not an option so its wrong im sorry well im gonna keep trying thank for ur help :)

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

no that was just an example, i didn't mean it to be the answer I was trying to show you how to do it (without giving away the answer)

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

use the ideas shown above to find the answer and tell me what you get

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh ok :/ i was confused but i got it i got 7=d that what i got

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

yes the degree is 7 because 3+4 = 7 and this is the largest sum

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok :)) thank you

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

you're welcome
