-4x+y=-7 (4,3) Write the equation of a line that passes through the given point and is perpendicular to the given line in slope intercept form

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Make y the subject by moving the -4x to the other side.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

When I move it I would get y=-4x-7

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Nope. You do know that once you move something to the other, the sign of the term switches.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

other side*

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so then that means it would be y=4x-7 ??

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yep, now just repeat the process from the last problem

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes. Good work.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

When you do these line problems, always start off by making y the subject. Makes your life much easier.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

haha thanks so since were doing the reciprocal of -4 the sign is the only thing that is changing right? so it wouldnt be as a fraction?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

?...Could you start from the beginning, because what you said is a bit confusing. And you said -4 when clearly you corrected yourself in the equation saying that it is 4x, not -4x.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

And to find the gradient of the line perpendicular, you would have to get the negative reciprocal....not the reciprocal.....

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Also, the reciprocal of an integer is fraction.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh ok so it wouldnt be left as a fraction right?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what's a negative reciprocal?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

its for example : 3 the negative reciprocal will be -3

OpenStudy (anonymous):

is that right?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I told you a reciprocal is the inverse of a number meaning the inverse fraction.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

reciprocal of 2 is 1/2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The phrase negative reciprocal has the word recirpocal in it. What can you tell me about that?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

reciprocal*

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ohhhhh ok then I think I get it know

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So what's the negative recirpocal of 4?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

reciprocal*

OpenStudy (anonymous):

It would be -1/4

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes, well done. Now I think you're good to go with these types of questions.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I've tried the problem, tell me I'm correct will the answer to the whole problem be y=-1/4x+4 ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

???
