Explain why Germany was fertile soil for the Nazis following World War I.
Lingering anger about the defeat in World War I. Many Germans did not believe their country had been "defeated", since they were not invaded. The Bolshevik revolution in Russia and the growth of communist parties in Germany generated much fear and concern among many Germans, particularly ex-soldiers and the former ruling class. The German parliament post-World War I had a very liberal constitution but was notoriously unstable. This meant that German national governments were very weak and found it difficult to implement policies. Germany was punished heavily by the Treaty of Versailles, including reparations payments of billions of dollars, to be paid to the former Allies in gold. In addition her army was reduced to 100,000 and she lost sizeable amounts of territory. The German economy floundered, with massive hyperinflation in 1923 and then the Great Depression in 1929
