tell me please what is isostructural species and how i come to know that any compound is isostructural or not

OpenStudy (abb0t):

I have never heard of the term "isostructural", but I have heard of the term isoelectronic. I also know that iso is a prefix meaning "same".... Could you be referring to isoelectronic maybe??

OpenStudy (anonymous):

actually i m iooklng for hyberdization and the question is that NH3+ is isostructural or not how i answer the question

OpenStudy (abb0t):

isostructural to what....?

OpenStudy (abb0t):

and NH3 is a neutral molecule that doesn't carry a charge. Are you referring to ammonium?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

isostructural to BF3 H3O+ NO3- and NF3

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yep sorry by mistake i wrote charge on it

OpenStudy (abb0t):

In that case, i think you are talking abt isoelectronic. Do you know what isoelectronic means?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no sir i dont

OpenStudy (abb0t):

isoelectronic refers to 2 molecules which have the same number of electrons or a vry similar electron configuration and the same structure(s) -number and connectivity of atoms- despite having different elements.

OpenStudy (abb0t):

for instance, CO and NO+ are isoelectronic to each other. Now, with that being said, which do you think are isoelectronic to ammonia.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

can i answer the question with respect to the central atom

OpenStudy (abb0t):

yeah.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok thanx and what is plannar structure and plannarity

OpenStudy (abb0t):

again, I am not sure what plannarity means, but as far as "planar" structure, I am pretty sure that's referring to a square planar molecule or one that can possibly form a square planar structure. For instance: |dw:1359535377630:dw| |dw:1359535485105:dw|
