A metaphor is a figure of speech implying a comparison that isn't literally applicable. Similes are very alike minus the fact that they use the words 'like' or 'as' when comparing.

So 3 examples would be:

1. "A man may break a word with you, sir, and words are but wind." from The Comedy of Errors by Shakespeare (Shakespeare doesn't mean that words are actually wind; instead, he means that words aren't permanent and that people can "break" or not keep their words. )

2. He broke my heart. (He obviously didn't break you heart, or else you'd be dead. But what is implied here is that he hurt you emotionally.)

3. I'm feeling blue. (This doesn't mean that the person is actually feeling the color blue, but rather they are feeling sad.)
