you CANNOT divide by zero so the denominator x-1 CANNOT be zero if it were, then x-1 = 0 x-1+1 = 0+1 x = 1 So x = 1 makes the denominator x - 1 equal to zero To avoid dividing by zero, x = 1 is kicked out of the domain. This explains why there is a discontinuity here.
