Deductive reasoning arrives at a conclusion based on scientific research and logic. Inductive reasoning is making generalizations from many examples. To best understand these differences, give examples of each type of reasoning in your own life.

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

any ideas on any of this?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Um would deductive be- I had 9 candy bars, I have 4 left, I must have ate 5?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

that's good, so you could make it more formal I had 9 candy bars 2 hours ago I now have 4 candy bars Therefore, I must have eaten 5 candy bars during that 2 hour time period Although, you could easily say that someone else either took the 5 candy bars and/or ate them

I need help with Inductive though

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

Inductive would be something like I tasted one candy bar, and it had nuts in it I tasted another candy bar, and it also had nuts in it Therefore, every candy bar has nuts in it Hopefully you can spot the flaw in this logic

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

Inductive is basically taking specific examples and trying to build a general truth or fact...but as you can see with the candy bars with nuts example, this is hard to do and full of problems. Not every candy bar has nuts in it even if you sample 99 candy bars with nuts in them.

So another example of inductive reasoning would be.. At the store, I saw a bag of chips for $2.99 down the first aisle. Down the second aisle, I saw another bag of chips for $2.99. Therefore; every bag of chips must cost $2.99.

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

good, this is also flawed logic because obviously some bags are $1 and others are $5 (idk just pulling the numbers out of the air, but you get the idea)

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

you would have to sample every chip bag to say it with certainty or you would have to find out some universal rule about chip prices (like the price of corn or something) to definitively say something about the price

thank you, again lol :)

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

you're welcome
